Cathy’s responsibilities at Biofarm Products Limited are many and varied, from marketing and promotion through to industry compliance and milking.

  • After initially studying science at Victoria University in Wellington, Jamie graduated from Massey University in Palmerston North with a BA (Psychology) and a Diploma in Dairy Technology. Jamie and Cathy began share milking for his family trust, on what was his grandfather’s dairy farm, in 1977. They have farmed biodynamically since 1980. Jamie’s chief responsibility is that of farm ecologist, which encompasses the farm management as well as ‘crafting’ each batch of Biofarm’s yoghurt and milk products.

A Few Words About Us

Biofarm Products Limited is a company with a difference – and we’re very proud of that. Right from day one, Biofarm has tried to operate outside the square and, judging by how busy we are, it is proving successful.

Biofarm, which is located overlooking the Manawatu River, specialises in producing natural foods with considerable nutritional benefits, while satisfying its rapidly expanding customer base, and caring for the environment and the animals in its care.

Certified organic since 1986, Biofarm is the second oldest commercial organic farm still operating and unique in the fact that it is still run by its original owners. Biofarm is also unique in that it produces both the raw material (milk) and the finished product on the one farm.

Directors Jamie and Cathy Tait-Jamieson first adopted biodynamic methods on the farm in 1980. The first yoghurt marketed under the Biofarm label was produced in 1986.

The first Biofarm yoghurt was produced at a Palmerston North town-milk factory, but the factory soon closed down and Biofarm developed its own MAF-approved processing facility on the farm in 1987. The factory has gradually been expanded to include a large cool store and packing area.

Biofarm Products Limited became the first company in New Zealand to supply organic dairy products to mainstream supermarkets. Biofarm uses Asure Quality (#265) certifier for independent verification of organic farming practices and products.

In 1997, Cathy won the Overall Excellence in Business Award in the Maori Women’s Business Awards. This award reflects the professionalism with which Biofarm Products Limited is run and the care and attention given to their customers. Biofarm Products Limited was also a finalist in the Manawatu Business Awards in 2001.

The Tait-Jamiesons manage the farm and produce dairy products the way they want to eat them, ensuring all along that the products have 100 percent traceability right back to the soil.

Biofarm’s range of yoghurt products, made from the milk of healthy, happy organically farmed cows, is available nation-wide. Its range of fresh, pasteurised milk products are available in selected outlets throughout New Zealand.
